“An international conference opening on Sunday in South Africa aims to develop a revolutionary technology to curb the spread of HIV and Aids.
More than 1,000 scientists will gather in Cape Town over the next four days to study a product known as microbicides.
The product, which can take the form of a gel or cream, releases an active ingredient designed to kill HIV during sexual intercourse. ”
That’s some damned good news for Africa. Very good news. Even better, they plan on having this on the market in the next 4 years. That’s pretty quick in the world of pharmaceuticals. What’s sad, and furthers my little tinfoil hat re big industry is the bit at the end of the article.
“But so far, the work is being funded by the American and British governments, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Pharmaceutical companies have shown little interest, since most Aids patients are in the developing world and have little money to spend on these products. ”
Kudos to Bill Gates and his wife Melinda. I may not like Bill Gates vision for software and operating systems, but he doesn’t horde the wealth he makes from it. These pharmaceutical companies are … I barely have words for it. They would obviously prefer to see millions die of a disease than do anything about it. They are so firmly chained to their shareholders, and therefor profit and bottom lines, that there will be millions of unneccessary deaths as a result.
That’s not just wrong, it’s disgusting. Seriously. If these deaths were being caused directly it would be a genocide. Unfortunately there are currently only two ways I can think of to force these multinationals to step up and do something. One is relatively quick but problematic in the extreme… legislate it.
The other is longer, and a lot more democratic…if it works. Buy stock in these motherfuckers and vote.
